Welcome to Year 5
In Year 5, we encourage children to become confident, independent learners who are willing to take risks, learn from mistakes and persevere when things become difficult.
Throughout the academic year, our learning is brought to life through a range of exciting units and experiences. We aim to make links throughout the curriculum wherever possible, giving children opportunities to read, write, investigate, create, perform and apply their learning in practical ways.
English – Reading and Writing
Our English lessons provide children with opportunities to explore a wide range of texts and develop a love of reading. We focus on developing vocabulary, comprehension, inference and the ability to discuss and respond to what we read.
In our writing lessons, children develop their skills in narrative, explanation, persuasion and other forms of writing, learning how to select vocabulary and sentence structures carefully to engage their readers.
History
Our History units include:
● The Victorians – exploring what life was like during the Victorian era and how Britain changed.
● World War One – investigating the causes and experiences of the First World War, using a range of historical sources.
● The Vikings – discovering who the Vikings were, where they came from and the impact they had on Britain.
Geography
In Geography, we explore:
● Natural resources - how people use and manage them.
● Digital geography - using technology and digital tools to explore the world around us.
● Longitude and latitude - developing children’s understanding of how we locate places on Earth.
Science
Our Science learning covers a range of fascinating topics, including:
● Light
● Properties and changes of materials
● Electricity
● Life cycles
● Animals, including humans
Art
Our Art curriculum allows children to explore different artists, techniques and materials. We investigate:
● Collage and texture
● Impressionism
● Drawing and illustration
Design and Technology
Our DT projects include:
● Electrical board games
● Sculpting
● Food technology
