Welcome to Hazel Class!

We are a class full of enthusiastic year 1 and 2 children and with a great classroom and a large outdoor area to learn in. In Hazel class we are becoming the best learners we can be whilst engaging in a broad and balanced curriculum. Being in Hazel class is an exciting change as we progress further into KS1. We will use our gem powers to maximise our potential; these include perseverance, asking for help, bouncing back from disappointment and defeating monster distractions! We have daily phonics, English, Maths and engaging unit lessons to learn and embed our key skills. These key skills are enhanced further through enhanced provision in our outdoor area.

This year (2023-2024) we will be learning more about some of the following topics:

History

  • Historical changes that have happened in our life so far

  • National and global events beyond our memory

  • Victorians (1837 - 1901)  and Industrial revolution

  • Significant people- I. K. Brunel

Science

  • Seasonal change

  • Animals and Humans

  • Plants

  • Materials and their properties

Geography

  • Contrasting locality - South America and Amazon rainforest

  • Geography of the UK

  • Human and physical features

Art and DT

  • Food and Helthy living

  • Experimenting with clay

  • Painting and drawing skills

  • Sliders and levers

  • Textiles

We will have lots of opportunities for ‘hands-on learning' through enhanced provision and we are looking forward to growing into the best learners we can be.

Handwriting Resources

Reading

Your child will come home every Tuesday with a new reading book and a library book.

Y1: Please try to listen to your child read their decodable book at least five times each week. You can ask questions encouraging children to think and make predictions about what they are reading. The reading log which has been sent home is linked to the phonics scheme that we use (Unlocking Letters and Sounds) and has a range of resources to support you and your child on their reading journey. These include phoneme mats, common exception words and QR codes to useful resources, including videos.

Y2: Please try to listen to your child read some of their school book five times each week. You can discuss the text, focusing on VIPERS skills which we use in school. Vocabulary - explain the meaning of words in context; Inference - make inference from the text/ explain and justify using evidence from the text; Predict - discuss what children think might happen next; Explain - explain why choices of words.characters were made, make comparisons within the text; Retrieve - retrieve and record key information/key details from the text; Sequence - sequence the key events in a story. These are are the key areas which we feel children need to know and understand in order to improve their comprehension of texts.
